Ambylopia occurs when there is a difference between the eyes that cannot be attributed to simply a difference in refraction (i.e. something that can be corrected by lenses) or other structural or physical differences between the eyes. It is a difference in how the brain processes signals from a “stronger” and “weaker” eye.

What is jaundice?

At MS Pediatric Associates, we have invested in the equipment and techniques that minimize the impact that jaundice has on you and your baby. We have a transcutaneous bilirubin meter that, in most cases, obviates the need for invasive blood tests to determine bilirubin levels. We also have two phototherapy units that treat jaundice effectively so you can spend time with your baby at home and not be readmitted to the hospital.

OAE Hearing Screener

MS Pediatric Associates is excited to have an on-site otoacoustic emission (OAE) hearing screener, which allows us to perform objective hearing screens on a very wide age range of children. The OAE screener doesn’t depend upon the patient responding – raising a hand when they hear a beep, for instance. Rather, it consists of a microphone fitted to the ear canal that detects sound waves emitted by the inner ear. In this way, young children are able to have hearing screens, even before they can fully cooperate.

We can speculate about the synapses that are formed when we read to children or that we are paving their way for academic success. But I can say for certain that I have great memories of being read to as a child. I also have great memories of reading to my children and I hope they will continue the tradition with their own favorite childhood books one day.
