Our approach

At Mississippi Pediatric Associates, we provide compassionate, comprehensive pediatric care in a comfortable and friendly environment. Dr. Van Wurm and nurse practitioners Liz Smith and Danielle Barber are dedicated to maintaining an open line of communication with parents and caregivers.

We have separate sick and well sides of the clinic. We do not use waiting rooms. Patients come from their vehicle directly to a room.

MSD CAN be CURED!

Set for Saturday, March 5, 2022, the annual Zebra Run for Rare Disease is the United MSD Foundation’s longest-running event. This year we’re back ready to lace up those running shoes and hit the pavement to #CureMSD.

Zebra Run 2022

Zebra Run for the United MSD Foundation will be held March 5, 2022 on Front Beach in Ocean Springs. This year’s goal is $80,000 as part of a larger goal of $5 million to adequately fund gene therapy research and treatment development. With adequate funding a cure for MSD is within reach. Will you consider becoming a sponsor for the Zebra Run?

Ambyopia

Vision screening is an included part of every check up at Mississippi Pediatric Associates. Ambylopia occurs when there is a difference between the eyes that cannot be attributed to simply a difference in refraction (i.e. something that can be corrected by lenses) or other structural or physical differences between the eyes. It is a difference in how the brain processes signals from a “stronger” and “weaker” eye.

What is jaundice?

At MS Pediatric Associates, we have invested in the equipment and techniques that minimize the impact that jaundice has on you and your baby. We have a transcutaneous bilirubin meter that, in most cases, obviates the need for invasive blood tests to determine bilirubin levels. We also have two phototherapy units that treat jaundice effectively so you can spend time with your baby at home and not be readmitted to the hospital.

OAE Hearing Screener

MS Pediatric Associates is excited to have an on-site otoacoustic emission (OAE) hearing screener, which allows us to perform objective hearing screens on a very wide age range of children. The OAE screener doesn’t depend upon the patient responding – raising a hand when they hear a beep, for instance. Rather, it consists of a microphone fitted to the ear canal that detects sound waves emitted by the inner ear. In this way, young children are able to have hearing screens, even before they can fully cooperate.

There's no way scientific articles can capture what reading really means in our lives. We can speculate about the synapses that are formed when we read to children or that we are paving their way for academic success. But I can say for certain that I have great memories of being read to as a child. I also have great memories of reading to my children and I hope they will continue the tradition with their own favorite childhood books one day.
